The dictionary defines soap as a "cleansing and emulsifying agent made usually by action of alkali on fat or fatty acids and consisting essentially of sodium or potassium salts of such acids; used for washing." Terribly ho-hum, isn't it? And that's pretty much how you probably view soap if you've never used the homemade kind before.
Until I started making soap, I had no idea just how different it could be. We were a two-soap family... I grew up on Dial and my husband used Ivory and that's what you would have found had you taken a peek in our shower. That is, until I started making soap. The first "official" batch of soap I made was scented with lavender essential oil. I'll never forget standing in front of the sink smelling that bar of soap. How heavenly the aroma of lavender was! The second epiphany came when I used it - I had never experienced lather like that before! That was the day that bathing went from being just a way to get clean to a seriously sensuous experience for me. Some people think that homemade soap is too expensive and that makes me sad. For about the same amount of money as a burger, fries and a coke you can take your morning shower from "ho-hum" to a luxurious spa-like experience. The meal will only make you happy for as long as it takes to eat it... the soap will give you pleasure for an entire month if you treat it right. Don't you deserve a little luxury in your life? |
At Miller's Homemade Soaps, we combine old-fashioned soap making methods with modern ingredients. Our soaps are made using the traditional cold-process, open kettle method typically used on farms years ago but all similarity with Grandma's product ends there. Our recipes include unique blends of butters and oils like shea butter, extra-virgin olive oil, coconut oil, palm oil, cocoa butter, avocado oil, sweet almond oil, rice bran oil, soybean oil and even castor oil to make our soaps. Each oil & butter has been carefully chosen for the special qualities it brings to the finished product.
Depending on the recipe, we may add in coconut milk, goat's milk, buttermilk, yogurt or even cream from dairy cows. Unlike commercial soap bars, all of our soaps retain every bit of the natural glycerin produced during the soap making process! Finally, we add herbs, oatmeal or other exfoliants and essential or fragrance oils to make each bar extra special. Our soaps are cut by hand and allowed to cure for 4-6 weeks for a long lasting bar of pure sensual pleasure. Each bar of soap is shrink wrapped and attractively packaged in a cigar band wrapper. All soap will continue to lose water as it ages. Even though our soaps typically weigh over 4 ounces, we list the weight on the label as 4 ounces just to be on the safe side (keeps us legal and out of trouble)! . |
